Danxia Burns the Buddha
丹霞烧佛 — Burning the Sacred for Warmth
The Koan
丹霞禅师于慧林寺,遇天大寒,取木佛焚之。
院主诃曰:「何得烧我木佛?」
师以杖拨灰曰:「吾烧取舍利。」
主曰:「木佛何有舍利?」
师曰:「既无舍利,更取两尊来烧。」
Chan master Danxia was at Huilin Temple when the weather turned bitterly cold. He took a wooden Buddha statue and burned it to keep warm.
The temple keeper scolded him: "How dare you burn my wooden Buddha?"
Danxia poked through the ashes with his staff and said: "I am burning it to find śarīra — relics."
The keeper said: "A wooden Buddha — how could it have relics?"
Danxia said: "If there are no relics, then bring me two more to burn."
Unpacking the Koan
This is perhaps Chan's most deliberately provocative act. Danxia doesn't accidentally damage a statue — he burns it, publicly, for warmth. The sacrilege is the point.
The temple keeper's outrage is perfectly reasonable. Buddha statues are sacred objects. You don't burn them. But Danxia's response is surgical: he claims to be searching for śarīra — the crystalline relics said to be found in the ashes of enlightened beings. If this statue is truly the Buddha, it should produce relics.
Of course it doesn't. It's wood. And Danxia's follow-up is devastating: "Bring me two more." If they're just wood, they're firewood. If they're truly Buddha, they'll produce relics. Either way, there's no reason not to burn them.
The logic is ruthless — and it's not really about statues. It's about the human tendency to worship the form of the sacred while missing its substance. The temple keeper protects the image while the actual Buddha-teaching — non-attachment, emptiness of form — goes unrecognized.
Why It Matters
Chan's iconoclasm is not destruction for its own sake. It's a specific diagnosis: when the symbol replaces the reality it points to, the symbol must be destroyed.
This doesn't mean "don't have sacred objects." It means: never forget what they point to. The moment a Buddha statue becomes more important than the warmth of a freezing human being, something has gone wrong. The teaching of compassion has been inverted by its own symbol.
Danxia is not anti-Buddha. He's pro-Buddha — so pro-Buddha that he refuses to let a piece of wood stand between him and the actual teaching. The warmth of the fire is the Buddha's compassion, if you can see it.
