Drinking Up the West River in One Gulp

庞居士:一口吸尽西江水 — Containing the Impossible

The Koan

庞居士参马祖,问曰:「不与万法为侣者是甚么人?」

祖曰:「待汝一口吸尽西江水,即向汝道。」

居士言下领旨。

Layman Pang visited Mazu and asked: "Who is the one that is not a companion to the ten thousand dharmas?"

Mazu said: "When you can drink up the West River in one gulp, I will tell you."

Pang understood the teaching in that moment.

Unpacking the Koan

Pang Yun (庞蕴, c. 740–808) was a wealthy layman — not a monk, not a renunciant, but a householder who attained profound awakening. He is Chan's great exception: proof that you don't need to leave the world to realize the truth.

His question is deceptively precise: "Who is the one not companion to the ten thousand dharmas?" In Buddhist philosophy, the "ten thousand dharmas" (万法) means everything — all phenomena, all objects of mind, all experience. To be "not companion to" them means to be free from them, to stand apart. It's asking: what is the self that is independent of all experience?

Mazu's answer is not an answer. It's an impossibility: "Drink the West River dry in one gulp." This is not a challenge to be met. It's a mirror held up to the question itself. Pang is asking about something beyond all dharmas — something infinite, total, absolute. Mazu responds with an equally infinite, total, impossible demand.

The brilliance is in the logic: if you truly want to know what is "not companion to all things," you would need to contain all things. And containing all things — drinking an entire river — is exactly what the "one not companion to dharmas" already does. The question contains its own answer. Pang sees this, and that's the end of it.

Why It Matters

Mazu's response is not evasion — it's the most precise possible teaching. The "one not companion to dharmas" is not somewhere else, not some special state of consciousness. It is the capacity that already contains everything, the way space contains all objects without being touched by any of them.

But here's the trap: if Mazu had explained this — "It's your original nature, it's the space of awareness, it's..." — Pang would have grasped the explanation instead of realizing the truth. By giving an impossibility instead of an explanation, Mazu forces Pang to look directly rather than understand conceptually.

For practice: you are already "not companion to the ten thousand dharmas" — not because you've escaped them, but because you are the awareness in which they arise. Can you drink the West River? You already have. You're doing it right now.

Practice Pointer

Look at your surroundings. Every object you see arises in awareness. Now try to find the boundary of that awareness — where does it end? Can you find an edge? If awareness has no edge, it is already the size of a river. What is it like to be the space in which everything appears?
