The Principle Behind the Fire-Water Clash

In Five Elements theory, Water and Fire are in an overcoming relationship. In the kitchen, the stove represents Fire and the sink represents Water. When the two face each other or are too close, they form a "fire-water clash" pattern, leading to the following problems:

  • Family members are prone to arguments and irritability
  • The homemaker's health may suffer, especially heart and blood circulation issues
  • Heat control becomes difficult during cooking, affecting food taste and nutrition
  • The kitchen is prone to leaks and fire hazards
  • Overall financial luck is blocked, making it hard to accumulate wealth

Traditional Feng Shui holds that a fire-water clash produces the hexagram "Before Completion," symbolizing difficulty in achieving success and family harmony. Therefore, this layout should be avoided whenever possible.

Fire-Water Clash Patterns

Directly Facing Each Other

The sink and stove placed directly opposite each other is the most typical fire-water clash pattern. Whether installed on the same counter at different levels or placed on opposite sides of the kitchen, this creates a strong clash.

Too Close Together

Even if the sink and stove are not directly facing each other, being too close (less than 1 meter apart) still creates a clash. The stove's heat accelerates water evaporation, and steam can interfere with proper stove operation.

Side by Side

Placing the sink and stove next to each other on the same counter, while not directly facing, still produces negative effects when tightly adjacent. Traditionally, there should be at least a "fire-separating board" between them.

Remedies

Method 1: Rearrange the Layout

The most fundamental solution is to redesign the kitchen layout and separate the sink and stove. In an L-shaped or U-shaped kitchen, place them in different work zones to create a logical "wash-chop-cook" workflow.

Method 2: Install a Partition

If you cannot change the positions, place a partition between them:

  • Use a wooden cutting board as a divider — Wood feeds Fire and absorbs Water, acting as a buffer
  • Install a stainless steel splash guard — Metal can help neutralize some fire energy
  • Place a potted plant between them — plants absorb negative energy

Method 3: Use a Screen

If the sink and stove face different directions, use a screen or partition cabinet to separate them. Choose wood or fabric screens and avoid metal materials.

Method 4: Place Feng Shui Items

The following items can help resolve the fire-water clash:

  • Five Emperor Coins: hang below the stove or above the sink
  • Copper Gourd: place in a kitchen corner to neutralize the clash
  • White Jade: place beside the stove for harmonizing energy
  • Green Plants: place between the two to absorb negative energy

Daily Maintenance Tips

  1. Keep the kitchen dry and clean to prevent excess moisture
  2. Turn on the range hood before cooking to reduce rising fire energy
  3. Clean the sink and stove promptly after use
  4. Kitchen windows should not directly face the stove
  5. Keep the stove clean; blue flames are ideal
