During the Spring and Autumn Period, Prince Zi Si of the state of Zheng assassinated Duke Xi and installed Duke Xi's son Jia as the new ruler - Duke Jian. Several noble princes were furious and plotted to attack, but Zi Si discovered their plan first and killed them all, seizing power for himself. Later, Zi Si redistributed the fiefs of the noble families, giving less land to four clans. These resentful clans joined forces with five other noble houses and a crowd of disaffected men. Together they stormed the capital, broke into the palace, killed Zi Si, and took Duke Jian hostage.
