Understanding That Sees Past Appearances

After Bao Shuya recommended Guan Zhong to the Duke of Qi, he stepped aside — accepting a lower rank so that Guan Zhong could govern without rivalry. For generations, Bao Shuya's descendants received stipends in Qi, and more than ten generations held fiefdoms.

The historian noted: "The world does not praise Guan Zhong's talent so much as it praises Bao Shuya's ability to recognize talent." The one who sees genius and steps aside — who serves the greater good by promoting someone above himself — is rarer and more admirable than the genius itself.

Core Wisdom

The one who recognizes greatness and gives it room to grow is performing an act of greatness themselves. The best talent scout is worth more than any single star.

This ending to the Guan Zhong and Bao Shuya story shifts the focus from the genius to the enabler. Guan Zhong built Qi into a superpower — but he could only do so because Bao Shuya created the conditions for his success. Bao Shuya's sacrifice — stepping aside, accepting a lower position — was the foundation of everything Guan Zhong achieved.

Sima Qian's judgment is pointed: the world celebrates the genius, but it should celebrate the one who recognized and enabled the genius. In modern terms, the talent scout, the mentor, the spouse who supports — these are the unsung heroes of every great achievement.
