The Origin Of All Things

English

In the beginning, heaven and earth were a混沌 — a formless egg. Pangu grew within it for eighteen thousand years. When he woke, he swung his axe and split the混沌 apart. The light, pure element rose as heaven; the heavy, dark element sank as earth.

"开天辟地" (opening heaven and separating earth) became the Chinese idiom for any act of unprecedented creation — the first time something is done, the beginning of a new era.

Core Wisdom

Every great creation begins with a single act of separation — light from dark, order from chaos, the possible from the impossible.

The Pangu creation myth is the Chinese Genesis. The image of a混沌 (chaos-egg) being split into heaven and earth is one of the most powerful creation images in any mythology. It suggests that the universe was not created from nothing, but organized from existing potential.

The idiom "开天辟地" is now used for any groundbreaking achievement — the first moon landing, the founding of a nation, the invention that changes everything. It carries the weight of cosmic creation: to "open heaven and separate earth" is to bring order where there was none.
