Repaying Kindness Generously

Before Han Xin became one of the greatest generals in Chinese history, he was a starving young man with no family, no connections, and no prospects. He spent his days fishing by the river, but often caught nothing.

An old washerwoman who worked by the river noticed his hunger. Without being asked, she shared her food with him — day after day, for weeks. Han Xin, deeply grateful, told her: "Someday I will repay you a thousandfold."

The old woman was angry: "A real man should be able to feed himself. I feed you out of pity, not because I expect repayment!"

Years later, Han Xin helped Liu Bei found the Han dynasty and was made King of Chu. He returned to the river where he had starved, found the old washerwoman, and presented her with a thousand pieces of gold.

Core Wisdom

Kindness given freely is the most powerful force in the world. A meal shared without expectation can earn a reward that a thousand years of ambition cannot buy.

The phrase "一饭千金" (one meal, a thousand gold) became an idiom for repaying a kindness generously. But the story's deeper lesson is about the old woman, not Han Xin. She gave without expectation, scolded without malice, and never sought the young man out again. Her generosity was pure — which is precisely why it was so powerful.

Han Xin's promise was sincere, but the old woman's refusal of it was more profound. True kindness does not calculate returns. It gives because it must, and walks away.
