A scholar named Zhao was studying alone one evening when a woman in green appeared at his gate. She was beautiful, intelligent, and spoke with an elegance that seemed to belong to another era. She told him a remarkable story.

In a past life, she said, she had been a palace maid in the Song dynasty. He had been a young official at court. They had fallen in love — secretly, impossibly, since a palace maid could never leave the forbidden city. When their affair was discovered, she was executed. He died of grief shortly after.

"I have been waiting for you," she said. "Three hundred years in the underworld, waiting for your soul to be reborn. Now I have found you."

Zhao was skeptical but moved. Over the following weeks, the woman in green visited him regularly. She knew details about Song dynasty court life that no ordinary person could know — the layout of the palaces, the names of forgotten officials, the music played at imperial banquets. She taught him poems that had been lost for centuries.

Eventually, she told him: "Our karmic debt is now repaid. I can rest." She vanished. Zhao found, where she had been sitting, a single green thread — the only physical trace of a love that had spanned three centuries.

📖 The Palace Maid as Tragic Figure Palace maids (宫女, gongnü) were among the most powerless figures in Chinese society. Selected for beauty, they entered the forbidden city as children and rarely left. Many died without ever experiencing love or freedom. In ghost literature, palace maid ghosts are a recurring type — women whose desires were unfulfilled in life and who return to complete them in death. The woman in green is the most sympathetic version of this archetype.
