The Primordial Heavenly Worthy Expounds the Dharma
At that time, the Primordial Heavenly Worthy (Yuanshi Tianzun)
was in the Grove of Seven Treasures, within the Palace of Fivefold Radiance,
together with the infinite holy assembly, emitting infinite light,
illuminating infinite worlds.
He beheld infinite sentient beings suffering various afflictions,
writhing in the world, cycling through birth and death,
drifting in the river of passion, floating and sinking in the sea of suffering,
with no respite.
Yuanshi Tianzun (Primordial Heavenly Worthy) is the highest of the "Three Purities" in Daoism, residing in the Jade Purity realm. The "Grove of Seven Treasures" and "Palace of Fivefold Radiance" are the sacred settings. The imagery of "river of passion" and "sea of suffering" borrows from Buddhist vocabulary to describe beings trapped in desire and pain.
Expounding the Infinite Great Dao
The Heavenly Worthy proclaimed:
You sentient beings arise from "not-existing" in existence,
and find "not-nonexistent" in non-existence.
In "not-form" there is form; in "not-emptiness" there is emptiness.
What is not existence becomes existence; what is not non-existence becomes non-existence.
What is not form becomes form; what is not emptiness becomes emptiness.
Emptiness is emptiness, yet emptiness has no fixed emptiness.
Form is form, yet form has no fixed form.
Knowing it is emptiness, emptiness has nothing to be empty.
When the emptied ceases, even non-existence ceases.
When non-existence itself ceases, there is profound constant stillness.
When stillness has nothing to be still — how can desires arise?
When desires do not arise, this is true stillness.
True stillness responds to things, responding without fixed direction.
The Heavenly Worthy said:
All conditioned phenomena are like dreams, illusions, bubbles, and shadows,
like dew and lightning — observe them thus.
This passage expounds the Middle Way of "neither existence nor non-existence," transcending attachment to existence, non-existence, form, and emptiness. The language resembles Buddhist Madhyamaka philosophy. The closing verse is nearly identical to the Diamond Sutra's "six metaphors" (dream, illusion, bubble, shadow, dew, lightning), reflecting the historical Buddhist-Daoist intellectual exchange.
Eliminating Calamities, Protecting Life
At that time, among the assembly there was a True Person named Fa Qiao
(Dharma Bridge), who rose from his seat,
bowed, and asked: "If sentient beings encounter various sufferings,
how shall they be rescued and protected?"
The Heavenly Worthy said: "You sentient beings need only single-mindedly
recite and uphold this sutra.
Flying Heaven Spirit Kings will naturally protect your body and life,
eliminate calamities and obstacles,
sever the source of evil, protect your life, and extend your years.
If there are those who, from within this sutra,
receive and uphold even one sentence or one verse,
know that such a person's merit is immeasurable."
"True Person" (Zhenren) is an honorific for one who has attained the Dao. "Fa Qiao" (Dharma Bridge) symbolizes using the Dharma to bridge suffering. "Flying Heaven Spirit Kings" are Daoist guardian deities. This sutra emphasizes the power of recitation — faithful recitation brings divine protection, calamity elimination, and extended life.
The Heavenly Worthy's Gatha
Look — you cannot see me. Listen — you cannot hear me.
Apart from all extremes — this is called the Wondrous Dao.
The supreme, profoundly deep, wondrous Dharma —
in a hundred million kalpas, it is rarely encountered.
Now that I see, hear, receive, and uphold it,
may I understand the true meaning of the Tathagata.
"Cannot be seen or heard" emphasizes Dao's transcendence of sensory experience. "Apart from all extremes" means freedom from all dualities — this is the essence of the Wondrous Dao. The closing vow resembles Buddhist opening verses, reflecting the era of Buddhist-Daoist textual synthesis.
