The True Scripture of Averting Calamities and
Transcending Tribulations, Spoken by the Heavenly Worthy of Numinous Treasure
Morning Liturgy
The Heavenly Worthy's Teaching
At that time, the Heavenly Worthy of Numinous Treasure
was in the Palace of Azure Radiance, expounding the wondrous canon,
seated upon a platform of seven treasures, emitting great light
that illuminated the ten directions.
Infinite Flying Heaven Spirit Kings all gathered in assembly.
At that time, the Heavenly Worthy addressed the multitude:
"You sentient beings revolve through the Three Realms,
drifting in the river of passion,
scorched and pressed by various sufferings and afflictions,
with no respite."
The Heavenly Worthy of Numinous Treasure is the second of the "Three Purities," residing in the Upper Purity realm. The Palace of Azure Radiance is where he expounds the Dharma. "Ten directions" includes the eight cardinal points plus above and below. The grand opening scene of radiance and assembled deities sets the stage for the teaching.
The Nine Tribulations
If there are sentient beings who encounter disasters and difficulties,
whose bodies are entangled with illness,
whose households are not at peace, where calamities arise,
who are invaded by ghosts and spirits,
whose karmic creditors demand their lives and pursue their souls —
they should know that this sutra
can eliminate all calamities and tribulations:
First, tribulations of Heaven; second, of Earth;
third, of Water; fourth, of Fire; fifth, of Wind;
sixth, of Thunder; seventh, of War; eighth, of Imprisonment;
ninth, all calamities and difficulties shall be eliminated.
This passage enumerates nine types of tribulations (heaven, earth, water, fire, wind, thunder, war, imprisonment, and all others), covering virtually all possible disasters. "Karmic creditors" refers to karmic debts from past and present lives. Daoism holds that scripture recitation can dissolve these karmic forces.
Merits of Upholding This Scripture
If there are good men and good women who can sincerely receive and uphold this sutra,
practicing it consistently without abandoning it,
they shall eliminate calamities, transcend tribulations,
extend blessings, and prolong life.
Wherever they go, all shall be auspicious.
Calamities shall be eliminated; lifespan shall be long.
The Heavenly Worthy then spoke this verse:
"Calamities and tribulations disperse and vanish;
blessings and fortune arise naturally.
Those who make offerings to this sutra
shall be guarded and protected by all heavens.
The Orthodox Unity pervades the Dharma-realm;
all evil shall hide its form."
"Good men and women" is a shared Buddhist-Daoist term. "Orthodox Unity" (Zhengyi) refers to the Way of Orthodox Unity (Celestial Masters tradition), one of Daoism's main lineages. The verse summarizes merits: eliminating calamities, extending life, auspiciousness, and divine protection.
