Hall Praises and the Repentance of Patriarch Qiu, etc.

Hall Praise
Having recited the scripture, each thought contains sincerity.
A thousand true ones listen attentively; ten thousand sages commune with the spirits.
Responding to the Primordial, merging Qi — universal transformation divides into forms.
The Nine Heavens issue their decree; the Three Realms all attend.
The Numinous Treasure descends; ten thousand sages arrive at the hall.
The Dao-Dharma flourishes and is practiced; all beings find fulfillment.
The Great Dao shines brilliantly; blessings arise immeasurably.
The "Hall Praise" is chanted after the main scriptures and before the repentance text, summarizing the merits of recitation and inviting divine beings. "Responding to the Primordial, merging Qi" describes how the practitioner's sincerity unites with the primordial energy. "Blessings arise immeasurably" echoes the phrase "Infinite Heavenly Worthy."
The Repentance of Patriarch Qiu (Qiu Chuji)
The boundless power of scripture-recitation is inconceivable —
its merit is dedicated to all the holy ones of the ten directions.
May those who see with a true heart seek repentance,
and all sins and obstacles, numerous as the sands of rivers, be wholly eliminated.
We who repent: from kalpas past to this very life,
borrowing fire, wind, earth, and water to form our bodies,
clinging to fragrance, taste, form, and sound, thus violating the Dharma.
Greed, anger, jealousy, harsh speech, false words.
Killing, stealing, deviant lust, indulging desires without restraint.
Disrespecting parents, betraying rulers and teachers.
Not revering the spirits of heaven and earth,
cursing the wind and reviling the rain.
Not believing in sins, blessings, cause and effect,
obscuring reason and deceiving the heart.
Patriarch Qiu — Qiu Chuji (1148–1227) — was the founder of the Dragon Gate (Longmen) sect of Quanzhen Daoism, famous for his journey to meet Genghis Khan. This repentance text is a key part of the morning liturgy. "Fire, wind, earth, water" borrows the Buddhist four elements. The text enumerates transgressions of body, speech, and mind, reflecting the integration of Buddhist and Daoist repentance traditions.
Following karma according to the heart, never awakening.
Such sins as these are limitless and boundless.
Now we confess and repent — each and every one.
Three of body, four of speech, three of mind — the roots of karma.
From beginningless time, all sins created.
Today, with wholehearted sincerity, we repent them all.
May the power of the Dao assist us, eliminating sins and transgressions,
severing the roots of obstacles, purifying body and mind.
Sins destroyed, blessings arise; we shall ever cultivate the Right Way.
May the power of the Dao protect us,
making this merit pervade all things.
We and all sentient beings together shall attain the Supreme Way.
"Three of body, four of speech, three of mind" refers to the ten unwholesome actions: killing, stealing, sexual misconduct (body); lying, frivolous speech, divisive speech, harsh speech (speech); greed, anger, delusion (mind). "From beginningless time" borrows Buddhist terminology. The closing dedication "we and all beings shall attain the Supreme Way" embodies the Daoist spirit of universal salvation.
The Three Refuges
With wholehearted devotion, I take refuge.
First, I take refuge in the Supreme Dao without limit — the foremost duty of the Daoist gate.
Second, I take refuge in the thirty-six divisions of the sacred canon — the scriptural treasure of the Daoist gate.
Third, I take refuge in the Great Dharma of the Mysterious — the teacher-treasure of the Daoist gate.
These are the Three Treasures of the Daoist gate, also called the Three Refuges.
The "Three Refuges" are modeled on the Buddhist Three Refuges (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), adapted as the Daoist Three Treasures: Dao (the Supreme Dao), Scripture (the thirty-six divisions of sacred canon), and Teacher (the Great Dharma of the Mysterious). This is the foundational ceremony for Daoist disciples, expressing devotion to these three treasures.
