Original Text

Knowledge is the beginning of action; action is the completion of knowledge. The sage's learning is one effort only — knowledge and action cannot be separated into two things.

English Translation

Knowledge is the beginning of action; action is the completion of knowledge. The sage's learning is one effort only — knowledge and action cannot be separated into two things.

Commentary

"Knowledge is the beginning of action; action is the completion of knowledge."

This is the most concise formulation of the unity of knowledge and action. Knowledge without action is incomplete — it is merely theoretical. Action without knowledge is blind — it lacks direction. True knowledge necessarily includes action, and true action necessarily includes knowledge. They are two aspects of one process.

Common Misconceptions

✗ Knowledge and action can be developed separately
✓ No -- they are one effort. Knowledge without action is not real knowledge.

Modern Applications

💡 The One Percent Rule

Yangming's "one effort" means: don't separate learning from doing. If you're reading about leadership, practice it that day. If you're learning a skill, use it immediately. Knowledge that isn't applied within hours begins to decay.
