Guan Zhong, the greatest statesman of the Spring and Autumn period, owed his career to one man who understood him when no one else did — Bao Shuya.
Guan Zhong once reflected on their friendship: "When I was poor, I partnered with Bao Shuya in business. I always took the larger share of the profits. He never called me greedy — he knew I was desperate. When I advised him on affairs and things went badly, he never called me foolish — he knew that timing matters. I was dismissed from office three times. He never called me incompetent — he knew I simply hadn't found the right ruler. I fled from battle three times. He never called me a coward — he knew I had an elderly mother who needed me."
"A parent gives you life," Guan Zhong said. "But Bao Shuya — he gave me understanding."
When Guan Zhong's lord was defeated and Guan Zhong was captured, it was Bao Shuya who recommended him to the Duke of Qi — his former enemy — as the wisest man in the kingdom. Guan Zhong became prime minister, transformed Qi into the most powerful state of the era, and the Duke became the first hegemon of China.
管仲曰：「吾始困时，尝与鲍叔贾，分财利多自与，鲍叔不以我为贪，知我贫也。吾尝为鲍叔谋事而更穷困，鲍叔不以我为愚，知时有利不利也。吾尝三仕三见逐于君，鲍叔不以我为不肖，知我不遭时也。吾尝三战三走，鲍叔不以我为怯，知我有老母也。

The friendship of Guan Zhong and Bao Shuya is the Chinese archetype of zhī jǐ (知己) — the one who truly knows you. Bao Shuya's genius was not in overlooking Guan Zhong's faults, but in understanding their context. Greed was really poverty. Cowardice was really filial duty.
Sima Qian records that people praised Bao Shuya's ability to recognize talent. But Bao Shuya's real gift was deeper: the ability to see the person behind the behavior, and to judge character by intention rather than outcome.
