Liu Bei, a warlord with grand ambitions but no strategist, heard of a brilliant young scholar living in seclusion at Longzhong — Zhuge Liang, known as the "Crouching Dragon." His advisor Xu Shu recommended him: "This man is a dragon coiled in waiting. You must go to him."

Liu Bei traveled to the thatched cottage in the hills. Zhuge Liang was not home. Liu Bei left respectfully and returned another day. Again, the cottage was empty. His brothers — the fierce warriors Guan Yu and Zhang Fei — were impatient. "Send for him!" Zhang Fei growled. "Let him come to you!"

Liu Bei refused. "He is worth the journey," he said.

The third time, Zhuge Liang was home — but asleep in the afternoon sun. Liu Bei waited outside for hours, standing in the snow, unwilling to disturb his rest. When Zhuge Liang finally woke and learned that the famous Liu Bei had visited three times and waited in the cold, he was deeply moved.

He agreed to leave his hermit's life and serve as Liu Bei's chief strategist. Together they would build the kingdom of Shu and challenge the might of Cao Cao. The "Longzhong Plan" — Zhuge Liang's grand strategy for dividing China into three — became one of the most celebrated strategic visions in Chinese history.

Core Wisdom

Sincerity is the most powerful form of persuasion. The one who humbles himself to seek wisdom will attract the wisest minds to his cause.

The three visits to the thatched cottage are a parable about the relationship between humility and greatness. Liu Bei was already a recognized leader — yet he stood in the snow like a supplicant, waiting for a sleeping scholar. This is not weakness; it is the supreme expression of respect for wisdom.

Zhuge Liang's decision was not based on Liu Bei's power or resources — he had almost none. It was based on Liu Bei's character. The man who would wait three times in the snow for a hermit's counsel was a man worth following.
