Zuo Si, a writer of the Western Jin dynasty, was not handsome. He stammered when he spoke and was awkward in social situations. But he had an ambition that everyone considered absurd: he wanted to write a rhapsody (fu) that would rival the greatest works of the Han dynasty.
He moved to the capital, Luoyang, and began his research. He visited officials, studied maps, and interviewed travelers about the geography and customs of the three kingdoms of Shu, Wu, and Wei. For ten years he worked. Everywhere in his house — the courtyard, the fence, even the privy — he kept paper and brushes, so that whenever a line came to him, he could write it down immediately.
When the "Rhapsody on the Three Capitals" was finally complete, no one noticed. Zuo Si, convinced his work was worthy but knowing his humble reputation would work against him, sought out Huangfu Mi, the most respected scholar of the age. Huangfu Mi read it and was astonished. He wrote a preface praising it as a masterpiece.
Word spread. Wealthy families competed to copy the text. Everyone in Luoyang wanted a copy. The demand for paper was so great that the price doubled. The phrase "洛阳纸贵" — "paper becomes expensive in Luoyang" — became an idiom for writing so brilliant that it disrupts the market.

Core Wisdom
True talent may be overlooked at first, but it cannot be hidden forever. The work that speaks for itself will eventually make the world listen.
Zuo Si's story is a parable about the relationship between talent and recognition. He spent a decade perfecting a single work — an act of artistic devotion that borders on madness. And when it was done, he was ignored, because no one expected brilliance from an ugly, stuttering commoner.
The breakthrough came not from self-promotion but from endorsement by the right person. In any era, great work needs a champion. Huangfu Mi did not change the writing — he changed the audience's willingness to read it. The paper shortage was not caused by Zuo Si alone; it was caused by the combination of genuine quality and credible endorsement.
