Origin
Cao Guojiu (曹国舅, "Imperial Brother-in-Law Cao") was the last of the Eight Immortals to join the group. He was a historical figure — a member of the Song dynasty imperial family, related to the empress by marriage. He lived in the lap of luxury: fine robes, jade ornaments, court banquets, and every privilege that money and rank could buy.
But his brother, Cao Jingzhi, was corrupt — a bully who abused his imperial connections to commit crimes. Cao Guojiu was ashamed. He tried to reform his brother, failed, and ultimately renounced his court position entirely. He retreated to the mountains, wearing humble clothes and practicing cultivation until he achieved immortality.
Sacred Artifact
法器
Jade Castanets
Cao Guojiu carries paired jade castanets (阴阳玉板) whose rhythm purifies the mind and wards off evil. Their sound connects the celestial and earthly realms through music — each click of jade on jade resonates with the fundamental vibration of the cosmos. They represent purification through rhythm: the steady, repetitive practice that slowly transforms the practitioner.
Legends
传说
The Brother's Shame
Cao Guojiu's brother Cao Jingzhi once seized a young woman for his pleasure. Cao Guojiu intervened, rescued the woman, and confronted his brother directly. When his brother refused to change, Cao Guojiu realized that remaining in the court would make him complicit. He burned his court robes, gave away his wealth, and walked into the mountains — barefoot.
The Meeting with Zhongli Quan and Lu Dongbin
In the mountains, Cao Guojiu encountered Zhongli Quan and Lu Dongbin. They tested him: "What are you cultivating?" He answered: "The Dao." "Where is the Dao?" they asked. He pointed to the sky. "Where is the sky?" He pointed to his heart. They smiled. He had passed.
Legacy
Cao Guojiu is the patron of actors and the theater — because jade castanets are used in Chinese opera performances. He also represents the principle that moral courage matters more than social position. In a world that values rank and title above all, Cao Guojiu walked away from both — and became immortal for it.
The Eight Immortals Complete
- With Cao Guojiu, the Eight Immortals represent every social class: beggar, scholar, general, princess, musician, flower-seller, hermit, and prince
- Together they prove: the Dao is available to everyone, regardless of birth, gender, or social status
- This is why the Eight Immortals are the most beloved figures in Chinese folk religion
