Origin
Lan Caihe (蓝采和) is the most enigmatic of the Eight Immortals — deliberately so. In classical texts, Lan Caihe's gender is never specified. They are described wearing one shoe and one bare foot, dressed in tattered blue robes, singing songs in the marketplace while carrying a basket of flowers. They would get roaring drunk, then vanish.
The gender ambiguity is not an oversight but a teaching. In Taoist philosophy, the Dao precedes the division of yin and yang — it exists before male and female, before all dualities. Lan Caihe embodies this pre-categorical state: they are the immortal who has not been sorted into any box.
身世

Basket of Enchanted Flowers
Lan Caihe carries a bamboo basket overflowing with supernatural flowers. Their fragrance can entrance gods and mortals alike, heal the sick, and bring visions of paradise. The basket is also said to be bottomless — no matter how many flowers are removed, more always appear. This represents the infinite bounty of the Dao.

The Market Singer
Lan Caihe wandered through markets singing songs that contained hidden Taoist teachings. The songs sounded like nonsense to most people — but those with spiritual ears heard the Dao in every verse. They would scatter money as they walked, and the poor would gather it. By the next day, the money had turned to leaves.

The Ascension
One day in the marketplace, Lan Caihe stepped onto a cloud and floated upward. A crane appeared and carried them to heaven. Before leaving, they dropped their flower basket, and the flowers scattered across the world — every flower that blooms from that day forward is descended from Lan Caihe's basket.

Legacy
Lan Caihe represents the principle that the Dao cannot be categorized. In a world that insists on sorting everything into boxes — male/female, useful/useless, sacred/profane — Lan Caihe is the eternal refusal to be pinned down. They are patron of street performers, flowers, and everyone who defies easy definition.
