The Jade Lady of Tai Shan

Bixia Yuanjun (碧霞元君, "Primal Lady of the Morning Clouds") is the goddess who presides over Mount Tai (泰山) in Shandong — the most sacred mountain in Chinese tradition. She is worshipped primarily as a goddess of fertility, childbirth, and the protection of women and children.

Her origin story varies: in one version, she is the daughter of the东岳大帝 (Great God of the Eastern Peak). In another, she was a mortal woman named Jade Maiden (玉女) who practiced cultivation on Tai Shan for thousands of years until she achieved immortality. In yet another, she is an emanation of the Queen Mother of the West.

"From the summit of Tai Shan, she sees all mothers and grants their deepest wish."

The Summit Temple

Her temple on the summit of Mount Tai — the Bixia Temple (碧霞祠) — is one of the most visited sacred sites in China. Pilgrims (mostly women) climb the 6,660 steps to the summit to pray for children, safe childbirth, and family blessings. The temple is covered in thousands of padlocks (连心锁) — couples lock them on the chains as a promise of eternal love.

Legacy

Bixia Yuanjun is one of the most popular deities in northern China. Her cult is particularly strong in Shandong, Hebei, and Henan. She represents the power of the feminine divine in its most nurturing aspect — the mother who protects her children, the earth that brings forth life, the mountain that endures forever.
