Fact & Legend
📚 Historical Origin
The Earth God (土地公, Tudi Gong, "Lord of the Local Land") is the most approachable deity in Chinese religion — a kindly grandfather figure who protects neighborhoods, farms, and local communities. Small shrines to Tudi Gong are ubiquitous at crossroads and village entrances.
Under the City God's jurisdiction, the Earth God manages the smallest administrative units — individual neighborhoods and farmlands. He is the divine equivalent of a village elder: not powerful in the cosmic sense, but deeply trusted and beloved.
他是 divine 的 village elder:在宇宙层面不 powerful,但 deeply trusted and beloved。
🌙 Sacred Legend
Tudi Gong is depicted as a smiling old man with a white beard, wearing a black hat and carrying a walking stick. His wife, Tudi Po (土地婆), is sometimes shown beside him. On the 2nd and 16th of each lunar month, businesses offer incense to the local Tudi Gong for prosperity and protection.
Legacy
Tudi Gong shrines are found wherever Chinese communities exist — from rural Fujian to San Francisco Chinatown. He is the most democratic of Chinese gods: no wealth or learning required to pray to him, just a sincere heart and some incense. He proves that divinity can be local, personal, and humble.
