Overview
The Three Pure Ones (San Qing, 三清) represent the highest level of the Taoist divine hierarchy. Unlike the Abrahamic concept of a single supreme creator, Taoism expresses the ultimate reality through a trinity — three aspects of the one Dao, each governing a celestial heaven and embodying a different stage of cosmic manifestation.
They sit enthroned in the three highest heavens of Taoist cosmology: the Jade Purity (Yuqing), Upper Purity (Shangqing), and Great Purity (Taiqing). Together they represent the Dao in its three phases: undifferentiated origin, luminous manifestation, and compassionate incarnation.
The Cosmic Hierarchy
Understanding the Three Pure Ones requires understanding how Taoism conceives of divine hierarchy. Unlike Greek or Norse mythology where gods compete for power, the Taoist hierarchy is one of emanation. The Dao flows downward like water from a mountain spring:

- Four Sovereigns (四御) — Administrators who govern cosmic operations

This means the Jade Emperor, though he governs heaven and earth, is subordinate to the Three Pure Ones. He is the CEO; they are the board of directors — or more precisely, they are the company itself made manifest.

Yuanshi Tianzun
玉清元始天尊

The Primordial Heavenly Worthy — the first and supreme member of the trinity. Yuanshi Tianzun represents the Dao in its primordial state, before the separation of yin and yang, before heaven and earth, before even the concept of "before." He is the point at which nothing becomes something.
He is depicted seated upon a lotus throne, holding the Pearl of Primordial Chaos (Hundun Zhu) — a luminous sphere that contains all potentiality. From this pearl, the ten thousand things emerge. He teaches by silence; his sermon is the stillness before the first sound.
In Taoist temples, he occupies the central position in the main altar. His heaven, the Jade Purity Realm, is a realm of pure luminous qi where no shadow exists — for shadow requires the duality that has not yet emerged at his level.
元始天尊——三清之首,代表道的元始状态。在阴阳未分、天地未辟之前,元始天尊就已存在。他是"无"化为"有"的那个临界点,是一切存在的最初源点。
他端坐莲花宝座之上,手持"混元珠"——一颗蕴含一切潜能的光明之珠。万物从此珠中化生。他以沉默说法;他的"讲道"就是第一声之前那片寂静。

Lingbao Tianzun

Upper Purity Heaven · 上清境
The Numinous Treasure Heavenly Worthy — the second of the trinity, representing the Dao in its luminous, manifesting phase. If Yuanshi is pure potential, Lingbao is potential becoming actual. He is the custodian of all sacred scriptures and divine teachings.
He holds the Ruyi scepter (Ruyi, 如意) — a curved ceremonial staff that symbolizes the fulfillment of all wishes. His teaching is the Dao made communicable: through ritual, through scripture, through the structured transmission of wisdom from heaven to earth.
The Lingbao tradition, one of the major schools of Taoism, takes its name from him. This school developed the most elaborate liturgical traditions — the communal rituals, the universal salvation ceremonies, and the recitation of sacred texts that became central to Taoist worship.

Daode Tianzun
太清道德天尊

The Way and Its Virtue Heavenly Worthy — the third member of the trinity, and the most accessible to humanity. Daode Tianzun is the deified form of Laozi (老子), the semi-legendary author of the Daodejing (道德经), the foundational text of Taoist philosophy.
He holds a fan of five auspicious colors (Wuse Shanshan) — representing the five elements (wuxing) through which the Dao operates in the material world. Where Yuanshi teaches through silence and Lingbao through scripture, Daode teaches through philosophy, ethics, and the art of living in harmony with nature.
The identity of Daode Tianzun with Laozi is one of the most significant theological moves in Taoism: it means the ultimate reality of the cosmos chose to incarnate as a human being — specifically, as a quiet archivist who wrote a slim book of poetry and then rode west on a water buffalo. The divine is found not in thunder and glory but in simplicity and wisdom.
道德天尊——三清之第三位,也是对人类最亲近的一位。道德天尊就是老子(李耳)的神格化。老子著《道德经》,为道教哲学的奠基之作。
他手持五色扇——代表五行(金木水火土),即道在物质世界的运行方式。元始天尊以沉默说法,灵宝天尊以经典说法,道德天尊则以哲学、伦理和与自然和谐相处的智慧来教化。

Worship & Ritual
Temple Altars
In every major Taoist temple, the Three Pure Ones occupy the central altar hall (三清殿). They sit left-to-right as Lingbao, Yuanshi, Daode — with Yuanshi in the center despite being "first."
Sacred Days
Each Pure One has a designated feast day. Yuanshi's birthday falls on the winter solstice (冬至), Lingbao on the summer solstice (夏至), and Daode on the 15th of the 2nd lunar month.
Meditation
In internal alchemy (内丹), the Three Pure Ones correspond to the three dantian (energy centers): upper (shen/spirit), middle (qi/breath), and lower (jing/essence).
祭祀与仪轨
宫观主殿
在每一座重要的道教宫观中,三清殿居于核心。三清坐像按左灵宝、中元始、右道德排列——元始虽为"第一",却居正中。
圣诞节日
每位天尊各有圣诞。元始天尊圣诞在冬至,灵宝天尊圣诞在夏至,道德天尊圣诞在农历二月十五日。
内丹修炼
在内丹术中,三清对应人体三丹田:上丹田(神/灵性)、中丹田(气/呼吸)、下丹田(精/生命本源)。
