The Two Plates
Every Da Liu Ren chart is built on two overlapping plates, each representing a different dimension of reality:
Earth Plate 地盘 — The Fixed Framework
The Earth Plate (地盘) represents the stable, underlying structure of space and time. It holds the twelve Earthly Branches in their fixed, natural order:
子 → 丑 → 寅 → 卯 → 辰 → 巳 → 午 → 未 → 申 → 酉 → 戌 → 亥
These positions never change. Think of the Earth Plate as the "ground truth" — the map of the world as it naturally is. In the chart visualization, it forms the outer ring.
Key insight: The Earth Plate is like a clock face — the numbers are always in the same position. What changes is where the "hands" point, which is determined by the Heaven Plate.
Heaven Plate 天盘 — The Dynamic Energy
The Heaven Plate (天盘) represents the dynamic, shifting cosmic energy of the moment being queried. It holds the same twelve branches, but their positions are rotated based on two factors:
- The Month General (月将) — which solar month it is
- The inquiry hour (时辰) — what time the question is asked
The Heaven Plate forms the inner ring of the chart. When you "cast" a chart, you're essentially determining where the Heaven Plate sits relative to the Earth Plate.
How the Heaven Plate Rotates
The rotation follows a precise rule:
- Find the Month General for the current solar month (e.g., 登明 for the month when the Sun is in the亥 position)
- Place the Month General on the Earth Plate position corresponding to the inquiry hour
- The remaining eleven branches follow in their natural order, wrapping around the plate
For example, if the Month General is 登明 (associated with亥) and the inquiry hour is 子 (midnight):
- 亥 goes to the 子 position on the Earth Plate
- 子 goes to 丑, 丑 goes to 寅, and so on
- The entire Heaven Plate has shifted one position clockwise
Reading the Overlap
When the two plates are overlaid, each Earth Plate position is "covered by" a Heaven Plate branch. This pairing is where the interpretation begins:
| Earth Plate (Fixed) | Heaven Plate (Dynamic) | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 子 (Zǐ) | 亥 (Hài) | The cosmic energy of亥 overlays the natural position of子 |
| 丑 (Chǒu) | 子 (Zǐ) | The cosmic energy of子 overlays the natural position of丑 |
| 寅 (Yín) | 丑 (Chǒu) | And so on around the circle… |
Why Two Plates Matter
The genius of the dual-plate system is that it captures both what is (Earth Plate) and what's happening right now (Heaven Plate). The difference between them reveals:
- Displacement — where energy has shifted from its natural position
- Overlay — which cosmic forces are acting on which natural domains
- Movement — the direction and speed of change in the situation
Practical analogy: The Earth Plate is a map of a city. The Heaven Plate is the current traffic flow. Together, they tell you not just where the streets are, but where the traffic is right now — and where congestion or empty roads indicate something important.
In the Chart Tool
In the online chart tool, the two plates are displayed as concentric rings:
- Outer ring — Earth Plate (fixed positions, labeled with direction and element)
- Inner ring — Heaven Plate (rotated positions, with Spirit Generals overlaid)
The Four Lessons and Three Transmissions are then derived from how these two plates interact relative to the Day Stem and Branch.
Next Steps
Now that you understand the plate structure, explore the factors that determine how the Heaven Plate is arranged:
- Monthly Generals — the celestial mechanism that drives the rotation
- Day Stems & Branches — the heart of every chart
- Twelve Divinities — the Spirit Generals that color each position
