Zhuangzi, Autumn Floods

释义Annotation

"Da fang zhi jia" comes from the "Autumn Floods" chapter of the Zhuangzi, sharing the same source as "yi xiao da fang." "Da fang" (the great method) refers to those who understand the great Way and possess a macroscopic vision. While Hebo lamented that he would be "laughed at by the masters of the great method," he also established an ideal cognitive benchmark — the sages who truly understand cosmic principles.

The character "fang" here does not mean "direction" but rather "method," "principle," or "law." "Da fang zhi jia" are those who have mastered the great principles. Through this concept, Zhuangzi sketches a portrait of the ideal knower: not the person with the most knowledge, but the one with the broadest vision and deepest understanding of things' essence.

In the "Autumn Floods" chapter, the Lord of the North Sea embodies "the master of the great method." He views everything from the ocean's expansive perspective, neither mocking nor despising Hebo's self-satisfaction, but patiently guiding him. This is Zhuangzi's vision of the "great master": one who possesses not only macroscopic cognitive breadth but also the generosity to embrace and guide others.

Modern Application

In modern Chinese, "da fang zhi jia" is commonly used to refer to experts or masters in a field. But Zhuangzi's original meaning is deeper — true masters are not only specialized but possess cross-disciplinary vision and inclusive generosity. In today's highly specialized knowledge landscape, we need this "great method" spirit more than ever: the ability to dive deep into details while also stepping outside frameworks to view problems from higher dimensions.
