"Shouling shi bu" is actually the same parable as "Han dan xue bu," from the "Autumn Floods" chapter of the Zhuangzi. The story concerns a young man (yuzi) from Shouling in the state of Yan who, having heard that the people of Handan walked with an exceptionally elegant gait, traveled there to learn their style of walking. Not only did he fail to master the Handan walk, he completely forgot his own way of walking and was forced to crawl home on all fours.
This idiom describes the situation of blindly imitating others and losing one's original skills or nature. The phrase "shi bu" (forgetting one's walk) highlights the story's core—losing one's original way of walking, which is losing oneself. Zhuangzi warns: everyone has their own nature and strengths; indiscriminately copying others leads only to gaining nothing from either side.
Compared to "Han dan xue bu," "Shouling shi bu" emphasizes the process of "losing"—not only failing to learn from others but also losing one's own abilities. This double failure of "learning Handan walking but losing one's original walk" is precisely the evil consequence of blind imitation that Zhuangzi critiques.
