释义Annotation
"Tai cang yi su" comes from the "Autumn Floods" chapter of Zhuangzi. In discussing the vastness of the universe, Zhuangzi said: Calculate the four seas within heaven and earth—is it not like an ant hole in a vast wilderness? Calculate China within the four seas—is it not like a single grain of millet in a massive granary?
This idiom describes something extremely small and insignificant. Before the vast universe, personal gains and losses, all successes and failures, are but a single grain in the great storehouse—inconsequential. This reflects Taoist thought on "equanimity of things"—in the eyes of the Tao, all things are equal, and all distinctions of size, nobility, and lifespan are relative.
Zhuangzi teaches people not to be overly attached to personal gains and losses, not to haggle over petty profits. When our vision expands to the scale of the universe, we discover our worries are truly laughably small, gaining freedom and transcendence of spirit.
Modern Application
In modern society, the wisdom of "Tai cang yi su" reminds us to maintain humility and open-mindedness. Before the vast universe and long history, personal honors and losses are truly insignificant. This perspective is not消极的虚无主义 but helps us break free from self-centered narrowness and gain a broader life perspective.
In daily life, this wisdom helps reduce unnecessary anxiety and obsession. When we obsess over a failed exam or job setback, we might recall the lesson of "Tai cang yi su"—from a longer temporal and spatial perspective, these are all trivial matters.
Zhuangzi's wisdom inspires us: maintain humility, neither becoming arrogant in success nor despondent in failure. True wisdom in life lies in recognizing our smallness while not abandoning effort and pursuit.
