Magu (麻姑) is the goddess of longevity — a young woman of unearthly beauty with long, elegant fingernails who has witnessed inconceivable spans of time. In the famous meeting with the immortal Cai Jing (蔡经), she declared: "I have seen the Eastern Sea turn to mulberry fields three times" (沧海桑田). The phrase "沧海桑田" — "seas become mulberry fields" — became one of the most profound Chinese idioms for the passage of cosmic time.
Despite witnessing eons, she remains eternally young and beautiful. Her long fingernails (a traditional symbol of feminine beauty and leisure) are so precious she must have a侍女 (attendant) scratch her back when it itches — a humorous detail that humanizes the cosmic goddess.
