📚 Historical Origin

Guan Yu (关羽), courtesy name Yunchang (云长), was a real historical general of the late Eastern Han dynasty who served the warlord Liu Bei during the Three Kingdoms period. He is the subject of the most detailed biography in Chen Shou's Records of the Three Kingdoms (三国志).

His historical achievements include military campaigns across Jing Province, but it was his legendary loyalty that made him immortal. When captured by rival warlord Cao Cao, Guan Yu refused to serve him despite lavish gifts and honors, insisting on returning to Liu Bei — an act of loyalty that became the gold standard in Chinese culture.

🌙 Sacred Legend

After death, Guan Yu was progressively deified over centuries: first as a local spirit, then as a national god, and finally as "Guandi" (关帝, Emperor Guan) — the God of War, Righteousness, and Wealth. He is depicted with a red face (symbolizing loyalty), wielding the Green Dragon Crescent Blade (青龙偃月刀), and accompanied by his adopted son Guan Ping and the loyal Zhou Cang.

Legacy

Guan Yu is worshipped across East Asia: by the military, police, business owners, and secret societies. His temples (关帝庙) number in the tens of thousands. He is the patron of brotherhood, loyalty, and martial virtue. In business, he is prayed to for honesty in dealings — ironic, given he represents military rather than commercial virtue.
