Fact & Legend
史实与传说
📚 Historical Origin
Zhao Gongming (赵公明) has one of the most dramatic career changes in Chinese religious history. In the earliest texts — the Search for the Spirits (搜神记, 4th c. CE) — he was a fearsome plague deity, a bringer of disease and death. Not someone you would invite to dinner.
By the Ming dynasty, his image had completely transformed. Through a complex process of theological rehabilitation, he became the principal God of Wealth (正财神). His old plague-bringing powers were reframed: he didn't cause suffering — he tested people's virtue. Those who endured hardship deserved fortune; Zhao Gongming decided who was worthy.
