📚 Historical Fact

Ge Hong (葛洪), courtesy name Zhichuan (稚川), was a polymath of the Eastern Jin dynasty. His masterwork Baopuzi (抱朴子, "The Master Who Embraces Simplicity") is the most important text on external alchemy (外丹) and Taoist养生 (nourishing life).

He documented hundreds of elixir recipes, herbal preparations, and meditation techniques. His work bridges abstract philosophy and practical experimentation — he was both mystic and scientist, a rare combination in any era.

🌙 Sacred Legend

According to hagiography, Ge Hong achieved immortality through his mastery of alchemical elixirs. He ascended bodily to heaven from Luofu Mountain (罗浮山) in Guangdong, leaving behind only his outer garments. The mountain remains a sacred site where pilgrims report visions of his luminous form. He is said to have been elevated to the rank of "Perfected One" (真人) in the heavenly bureaucracy.

Legacy

Ge Hong's Baopuzi remains the single most important source for understanding early Taoist alchemy and养生 practices. His detailed descriptions of cinnabar, mercury, and gold elixirs — while dangerous in practice — demonstrate an early form of experimental chemistry. He also wrote extensively on protective magic, herbal medicine, and the moral prerequisites for cultivation.
