Zhengyi

📚 Historical Fact

Zhang Daoling (张道陵, also 张道陵) was born in 34 CE in Jiangsu province. A scholar of Confucian classics, he turned to Daoist cultivation and established the Way of the Celestial Masters (天师道, Tianshi Dao) in Sichuan — the first organized Taoist religious community in history.

He created a system of communal governance organized into 24 parishes, each with its own leader. His system included confession of sins, healing through talismans, and a graded hierarchy of spiritual authority. He charged five pecks of rice (五斗米) as an initiation fee — earning the movement its nickname, the "Five Pecks of Rice" religion (五斗米道).

🌙 Sacred Legend

Laozi himself appeared to Zhang Daoling on Mount Heming Shan in 142 CE, revealing the covenant of the Zhengyi (Orthodox Unity). He was granted the title "Celestial Master" and given the power to command spirits, banish demons, and grant immortality. His demon-subduing sword and jade seal remain hereditary family heirlooms of the Zhang dynasty of Celestial Masters — a lineage that continues to this day, over 60 generations later.

Legacy

Zhang Daoling founded the Zhengyi (Orthodox Unity) school — one of the two major surviving branches of Taoism (alongside Quanzhen). The Zhang family hereditary Celestial Masters continue to this day, making it one of the longest-running religious dynasties in world history. His system of talismanic healing, communal confession, and graded authority shaped all subsequent Taoist organization.
