The Art of Nurturing Life

Yang Sheng (养生, yǎng shēng) means "nurturing life" — the highest aspiration of Chinese medicine. Not merely treating disease, but cultivating vitality, longevity, and harmony with nature's rhythms.

「上古之人,其知道者,法于阴阳,和于术数,食饮有节,起居有常,不妄作劳,故能形与神俱,而尽终其天年,度百岁乃去。」

Huangdi Neijing, Su Wen, Chapter 1

"The ancients who understood the Dao followed Yin and Yang, ate in moderation, rose and rested at regular times. Thus body and spirit remained together, and they lived to a hundred years."

The Four Pillars · 养生四要

🍚 Diet · 食养

"Medicine and food share the same origin" (药食同源). Eat warm foods in winter, lighter foods in summer. Eat until 70% full (七分饱). The Stomach prefers warmth — avoid iced drinks.

😴 Sleep · 睡眠

Sleep before 11 PM (子时) when Yang qi regenerates. The Liver peaks at 1–3 AM — being asleep allows proper blood storage. A brief midday nap supports the Heart.

🏃 Movement · 运动

Chinese exercise circulates qi rather than building muscle: Tai Chi (太极拳), Baduanjin (八段锦), Wu Qin Xi (五禽戏), Yi Jin Jing (易筋经). Avoid excessive sweating.

🧘 Spirit · 调神

The highest level: nurturing the spirit (养神). Anger damages Liver, grief damages Lung, fear damages Kidney. Practice stillness (静), emotional moderation, and contentment (知足).

🦶 Foot Soak

Soak feet in warm water 15–20 min before bed. Six meridians meet at the feet. Add ginger or mugwort for enhanced effect.

🤲 Belly Rubbing

Abdominal circles (clockwise) for 5 minutes daily. Aids digestion, moves stagnation, strengthens Spleen/Stomach.
