Overview
The Twelve Palaces (十二宫, Shí Èr Gōng) are the structural foundation of every Zi Wei Dou Shu chart. Each palace governs a specific domain of life, and the stars within each palace reveal the patterns, tendencies, and potential experiences in that area.
The palaces are arranged in a fixed 4×4 grid. The position of your Ming Palace (命宫, Self Palace) — determined by your lunar birth month and birth hour — fixes the position of all other palaces around the grid.

Palace Relationships: The Triangular System
In ZWDS, palaces don't exist in isolation. They form triangular relationships (三方四正) that create deeper patterns of meaning. Understanding these relationships is essential for accurate chart reading.
Self Triangle (命三方)
The core life triangle. Stars in these three palaces together define your fundamental capacity for success, achievement, and material well-being.
Relationship Triangle (偶三方)
Governs relationships, external opportunities, and inner happiness. A strong Relationship Triangle suggests harmonious partnerships and a fulfilling inner life.
Family Triangle (父三方)
Covers all family relationships — parents, siblings, and children. Stars here reveal the quality of your family connections across generations.
Material Triangle (田三方)
Governs material possessions, social support, and physical well-being. Together these palaces indicate your material comfort and physical vitality.
"A single palace tells you what. The triangular relationships tell you how — how the pieces of your life connect, support, or challenge each other."
