Every thought preserving heavenly principle — over time the mind condenses, as Daoists say of 'forming the holy embryo.'
"Every thought preserving heavenly principle — over time the mind condenses, like the Daoists' 'forming the holy embryo.'"
Lu Cheng asked: "Is establishing aspiration about preserving heavenly principle in every thought, without preserving selfish desires?"
The Master said: "Preserving heavenly principle in every thought is establishing aspiration. If you can maintain this without forgetting, over time the mind condenses — as the Daoists say of forming the holy embryo. When this thought of heavenly principle is constantly preserved, gradually reaching the beautiful, great, holy, and divine — all comes from preserving and expanding this one thought."

Yangming's "every thought preserving heavenly principle" is like a mental micro-habit. You don't need a dramatic life change — just align each small thought with what is right. Over time, these micro-habits compound into profound transformation.
"Preserving heavenly principle in every thought is establishing aspiration."
Yangming redefines "establishing aspiration" not as setting a grand goal but as a moment-to-moment practice. Aspiration is not a one-time declaration but a continuous stream of thoughts aligned with heavenly principle. Each thought that preserves heavenly principle IS the aspiration.
"Over time the mind condenses, like forming the holy embryo."
This is a powerful metaphor from internal alchemy (neidan). Just as the Daoist practitioner gradually condenses vital energy into the "holy embryo," the Confucian practitioner gradually condenses heavenly principle in the mind through sustained moral effort. The result is not just moral behavior but a transformed state of being.
