Separating mind and principle is Gaozi's theory of 'righteousness is external,' which Mencius deeply refuted.
"Serving external things while neglecting the inner — broad yet lacking focus, toilsome yet without result."
爱曰:「如事父之孝、事君之忠、交友之信、治民之仁,其间有许多理在,恐亦不可不察。」
先生叹曰:「此说之蔽久矣,岂一语所能悟!今姑就所问者言之:且如事父,不成去父上求个孝的理;事君,不成去君上求个忠的理;交友治民,不成去友与民上求个信与仁的理。都只在此心。心即理也。此心无私欲之蔽,即是天理,不须外面添一分。以此纯乎天理之心,发之事父便是孝,发之事君便是忠,发之交友治民便是信与仁。只在此心去人欲、存天理上用功便是。」
Xu Ai said: "Things like filial piety in serving one's father, loyalty in serving one's ruler, trustworthiness with friends, benevolence in governing the people — there are many principles within these, and I fear they cannot be left unexamined."
The Master sighed: "The obscuration of this view has lasted a long time — how can it be understood in a single sentence! Take serving one's father — one cannot go to the father to seek the principle of filial piety. Serving one's ruler — one cannot go to the ruler to seek the principle of loyalty. Making friends and governing the people — one cannot go to friends and the people to seek the principles of trustworthiness and benevolence. All these are only in this mind. The mind is principle. When this mind is free from the obscuration of selfish desires, it is heavenly principle — there is no need to add the slightest thing from outside. With this mind that is perfectly pure heavenly principle, when expressed in serving one's father it is filial piety, when expressed in serving one's ruler it is loyalty, when expressed in making friends and governing the people it is trustworthiness and benevolence. One need only work on removing selfish desires and preserving heavenly principle in this mind."
In team management, relying on systems and KPIs (external rules) can only maintain minimum standards. True excellence comes from members' intrinsic motivation (the mind of heavenly principle). Instead of creating more rules, create an environment where people's hearts naturally认同.
"The obscuration of this view has lasted a long time."
Yangming laments how deeply the idea of "separating mind and principle" has taken root. The scholarly world of his time普遍 believed that principle exists in things and one must investigate to know it — this mindset was so entrenched that one sentence could not correct it.
"When this mind is free from the obscuration of selfish desires, it is heavenly principle."
This is the most concise and powerful statement of Yangming's School of Mind. Heavenly principle is not something acquired from outside but the mind's original state. Remove the obscuration of selfish desires and heavenly principle naturally appears. The effort is all in "removing selfish desires and preserving heavenly principle."
