「蟪蛄不知春秋」与「朝菌不知晦朔」为姊妹句。蟪蛄只活一个季节，无法理解四季轮回的完整周期。庄子以此与冥灵（以五百岁为春）、大椿（以八千岁为春）作对比，展示认知的层次。没有绝对的「大」与「小」，只有相对的认知范围。
