「朝菌不知晦朔」是庄子对认知局限的精妙比喻。朝生暮死的菌类，不知道一个月有多长。认知的边界由生命（经验）的边界决定。朝菌不是「不想」知道晦朔，而是「不能」知道——它的整个生命历程不足以支撑这种认知。庄子暗示：人类的认知同样受限于自身的「寿命」和经验范围。
"The morning mushroom knows not dawn and dusk" — a mushroom that sprouts at dawn and dies at dusk cannot comprehend a month. The boundary of cognition is determined by the boundary of experience. Human cognition is similarly limited by our "lifespan" and experience.
