Original Text

— Daodejing, Chapter 74 · 📖

Annotation

"The people do not fear death" is Laozi's sharpest critique of tyranny. When people no longer fear death, what use is threatening them with execution? Only the heavenly "officer of death" has authority over life and death.

Modern Application

Harsh punishments cannot resolve social conflicts — improving livelihoods is the real solution. Punishment alone cannot inspire; creating an environment people love is the right path.
