English Translation

A scholar was reading by night when a female ghost女鬼 nǚ guǐA female spirit of the dead. "Female ghosts" are the most common supernatural characters in Chinese literature, typically appearing as avengers or lovesick spirits. But Ji Yun's ghost is different — she's a "reasonable" ghost who can rationally apologize after realizing her mistake. appeared by his lamp, hair disheveled, tongue hanging out, face blue-white. The scholar was terrified.


The ghost shrieked: "I am the daughter of the Such-and-such family — you murdered me, and I have come to claim your life!" The scholar trembled: "I have never met you — how could I have killed you?" The ghost froze, studied him carefully, then suddenly covered her face: "Oh dear哎呀 āi yāAn exclamation expressing surprise, regret, or embarrassment. A ghost using such utterly colloquial speech instantly dissolves the horror atmosphere — Ji Yun creates the strongest possible comedic reversal. — wrong person!"

"The Wrong Enemy" is the finest piece in Ji Yun's "ghosts are reasonable" series. Traditional ghosts are irrational and absolutely terrifying; Ji Yun's ghost is cultured — she apologizes after finding the wrong person, curtsies, says "my apologies." This "polite ghost" setup transforms horror entirely into comedy.


"Oh dear — wrong person!" is the masterstroke. A ghost using such colloquial speech instantly shifts the scene from horror film to comedy. Ji Yun implies: ghosts aren't可怕的; what's可怕的 is human evil — ghosts know to correct their mistakes, while humans persist in error.


Precise Control of Narrative Rhythm

From the horror scene of "disheveled hair, hanging tongue, blue-white face" to the comedic turn of "oh dear, wrong person" to the elegant resolution of "curtsying and floating away" — Ji Yun completes a full narrative arc from horror to comedy in barely a hundred characters. This precise rhythmic control is among the highest achievements of Qing notebook literature.

术语 裣衽 (Liǎn rèn / Adjusting the Robes)
