📚 Historical Origin
Huaguang Dadi (华光大帝, "Great Emperor of Flowery Radiance"), also known as Marshal Ma (马元帅), is a fierce fire deity with three eyes who commands celestial fire. He is one of the Five Manifestations (五显) — five powerful spirit generals in Taoist mythology.
Originally a Buddhist figure (Marici, 摩利支天), he was absorbed into Taoism during the Song dynasty as a fierce protector deity and exorcist. His three eyes see past, present, and future — nothing escapes his vision.

Huaguang was born from the light of a flaming pearl. He descended to earth five times, each incarnation involving dramatic adventures — fighting demons, stealing peaches from heaven, and being reborn through fire. His火尖枪 (fire-tipped spear) can pierce any evil, and his三昧真火 (true fire of samadhi) burns away all delusion.

Legacy
Huaguang is worshipped primarily in southern China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia. His cult is particularly strong among Taoist ritual masters (道士) who perform exorcisms. The "Huaguang Festival" (华光诞) on the农历九月二十八 features fire-walking ceremonies in his honor.
