Overview
The Three Officials (San Guan Da Di, 三官大帝) are a triad of deities governing three fundamental aspects of the cosmic-human relationship. They are among the earliest and most widely worshipped gods in Chinese religion — their cult predates both Buddhism and organized Taoism in China.
Each Official presides over a domain and a function: the Official of Heaven (Tian Guan) bestows blessings; the Official of Earth (Di Guan) forgives sins; the Official of Water (Shui Guan) liberates from misfortune. Together they address the three great anxieties of human existence: will fortune come? Can past wrongs be undone? Can present suffering be relieved?
Official of Heaven
The Heavenly Official — the greatest bestower of blessings and fortune. He is often identified with or closely associated with the Ziwei Dadi (Purple Subtlety Emperor) of the Four Sovereigns. On the 15th of the first lunar month (the Lantern Festival, 元宵节), he descends to earth to inspect the moral conduct of humanity and bestow blessings upon the virtuous.
His image — a dignified official in imperial robes, holding a scroll listing blessings — is one of the most common motifs in Chinese New Year decorations. The phrase "天官赐福" (Heaven Official Bestows Blessings) appears on door scrolls across the Chinese-speaking world.

Official of Earth
The Earthly Official — the great pardoner of sins. On the 15th of the 7th lunar month (the Ghost Festival, 中元节), he opens the gates of the underworld and examines the records of every being's good and evil deeds. Those who repent may receive forgiveness and lighter judgment.
This is the theological basis for the Ghost Festival (Zhongyuan Jie) — one of the most important dates in the Chinese calendar. Families prepare offerings for both their ancestors and wandering ghosts, hoping the Earthly Official will show mercy.
Domain: Forgiveness, Repentance, Justice ·
Official of Water
The Water Official — the great liberator from misfortune and灾难. On the 15th of the 10th lunar month (下元节), he descends to relieve the suffering of all beings trapped in difficulty — whether physical illness, material poverty, spiritual anguish, or karmic entanglement.
Water in Chinese thought represents flow, change, and the dissolving of obstacles. The Water Official embodies this principle: no suffering is permanent, no misfortune is unchangeable. His intervention is not about punishment or reward but about liberation — opening the way forward.

The Three Great Festivals
Each Official has a designated festival on the 15th of their respective lunar month — three of the most important dates in the Chinese religious calendar:
🏮 Lantern Festival (正月十五) — Tian Guan's birthday. The streets glow with lanterns, and families pray for a year of blessings. This is also the first full moon of the new year.
👻 Ghost Festival (七月十五) — Di Guan's judgment day. The Gates of Hell open, and offerings are made to ancestors and wandering spirits. Families burn joss paper and prepare elaborate feasts for the dead.
💧 Water Official Festival (十月十五) — Shui Guan's descent. Less well-known but deeply significant — a day to pray for relief from accumulated misfortune and to start fresh.
