BaZi (八字, Bā Zì — "Eight Characters"), also known as the Four Pillars of Destiny (四柱命理, Sì Zhù Mìng Lǐ), is one of the most important branches of Chinese metaphysics. Developed during the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE) and refined through the Song and Ming dynasties, it maps a person's destiny based on the exact moment of birth.
The system converts your birth date and time into four "pillars," each represented by two Chinese characters — a Heavenly Stem (天干) and an Earthly Branch (地支). Together, these eight characters form a cosmic blueprint that reveals personality, strengths, weaknesses, relationships, career aptitude, and life trajectory.
The ten Heavenly Stems (甲乙丙丁戊己庚辛壬癸) and twelve Earthly Branches (子丑寅卯辰巳午未申酉戌亥) cycle through 60 possible combinations (六十甲子), creating a repeating calendar cycle used for timekeeping since the Shang Dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BCE).
Central to BaZi analysis is the concept of the Day Master (日主) — the Heavenly Stem of your birth day. All other elements in your chart are interpreted in relation to this core element: some support it, some drain it, some control it, and some are controlled by it.
