Overview
Chinese Auspicious Date Selection, known as Zé Jí (择吉) or "Choosing a Lucky Day," is a traditional folk custom that selects suitable lucky days and time points for important life events based on Heavenly Stems, Earthly Branches, Five Elements, zodiac taboos and traditional almanac (Huangli) rules.
The core idea is to seek harmony between time, personal birth fate and event attribute — avoid unlucky taboos, and pray for smooth development and good luck.
Four Pillars of Date Selection
What Goes Into Choosing a Day
- Heavenly Stems & Earthly Branches: The generating/restraining relationships of the day's and hour's stem-branch combinations
- Zodiac compatibility: Avoid days that clash (冲), punish (刑), harm (害), or break (破) the person's zodiac sign
- Five Elements: The selected day's elements should support and nourish the person's BaZi chart
- Almanac (Huangli): The day's ruling star spirits and the "suitable/avoid" (宜忌) notations for specific activities
Key Terminology

- Prefer: Six Harmony (六合) or Three Harmony (三合) days that match both zodiacs
- Check: Five Elements of the day should support both people's BaZi charts
- Confirm: Almanac marks the day as "Suitable for Marriage" (宜嫁娶)
