The Five Elements (五行, Wǔ Xíng) — Metal (金), Wood (木), Water (水), Fire (火), and Earth (土) — form the foundational framework of Chinese cosmology. Rather than literal substances, they represent five phases of energy transformation, five modes of qi (气) in perpetual motion. The character 行 (xíng) literally means "to walk" or "to move," emphasizing that these are dynamic processes, not static materials.
The theory of the Five Elements emerged during the Warring States period (475–221 BCE) and was systematized by the philosopher Zou Yan (邹衍), who applied it to history, politics, and natural phenomena. According to his theory, dynasties rose and fell according to elemental cycles — each dynasty ruling under the patronage of a dominant element.
Two fundamental cycles govern the interactions: the Generating Cycle (相生, xiāng shēng), where each element nurtures the next, and the Overcoming Cycle (相克, xiāng kè), where each element restrains another. These cycles describe the perpetual dance of creation and destruction that drives all change in the universe.
In practice, Five Elements theory permeates every aspect of Chinese life: traditional medicine (organ correspondences), martial arts (animal styles), music (pentatonic scale), cuisine (flavor profiles), architecture (Feng Shui directional placement), and personal cultivation. Understanding your elemental balance is considered a key step toward living in harmony with the natural order. Your name's elemental composition also plays a role in this balance.
