Five Elements Complement in Naming
When a baby's BaZi shows a deficiency in a particular element, the name is chosen to supplement it through character radicals:
Element → Radicals → Example Characters
Traditional Naming Principles
- Ancestor avoidance: Do not reuse names of ancestors or (historically) emperors
- Gender conventions: Boys' names lean toward strength (强, 威, 杰); girls' names toward grace (婉, 静, 娴)
- "Humble names" tradition: Using humble words like 狗 (dog), 牛 (ox), 豆 (bean) in nicknames (e.g., 狗剩 Gǒu Shèng, 毛豆 Máo Dòu) — folk belief that rough names ward off bad luck and help children survive
- Sound & meaning: Names should sound pleasant and carry auspicious, culturally rich meaning
- Clan generation names: Many families use a generation poem to determine one character shared by all siblings of the same generation
