What Is BaZi
BaZi (八字), also called Eight Characters or Four Pillars of Destiny, is the most important traditional Chinese folk destiny culture system. It records a person's birth year, month, day and hour with Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, forming four pillars and eight characters in total.
The term "Four Pillars" refers to the four time units (year, month, day, hour); each pillar has one Stem and one Branch, totaling 8 characters — hence "BaZi" (Eight Characters).
Structure of the Four Pillars
| Pillar | Chinese | Represents | How to Determine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Year Pillar (年柱) | Nián Zhù | Ancestry, early life | By Lichun (Start of Spring), not Jan 1 |
| Month Pillar (月柱) | Yuè Zhù | Parents, youth | Solar term month (Lichun = Month 1) |
| Day Pillar (日柱) | Rì Zhù | Self, spouse | Ten-Thousand-Year Calendar lookup |
| Hour Pillar (时柱) | Shí Zhù | Children, later life | Day Stem + time Branch (Wushudun formula) |
How BaZi Is Composed
Example
For someone born on the 14th day of the 3rd lunar month in 2026 (Bǐng Wǔ year) at Shen hour:
- Year Pillar: Bǐng Wǔ (丙午) — Fire Horse
- Month Pillar: Rén Chén (壬辰) — Water Dragon
- Day Pillar: Looked up in calendar (60-day cycle)
- Hour Pillar: Wù Shēn (戊申) — Earth Monkey
The Day Stem (日干) is the most important — it represents the person themselves and is the reference point for all other relationships.
Key Points in BaZi Arrangement
- Year Pillar: Determined by Lichun (Start of Spring), not Chinese New Year — this is the fortune-telling standard
- Month Pillar: Follows solar terms: Lichun to Jingzhe = Month 1 (Yin), and so on
- Day Pillar: A continuous 60-day cycle; must be looked up in the Ten-Thousand-Year Calendar
- Hour Pillar: Derived from the Day Stem using the Wushudun (五鼠遁) formula, paired with the time Branch
Cultural Core
Based on the Five Elements attribute of each character, folk culture analyzes personal character, life trend, career, marriage, fortune and taboos. It has been deeply integrated into Chinese folk life for thousands of years.
Common Folk Usages
- Personality analysis: Understanding innate character and life strengths
- Naming guidance: Balancing Five Elements in baby names based on BaZi
- Marriage compatibility: Traditional check for harmony between two people's charts
- Life decisions: Reference for important choices and auspicious timing
- Annual fortune: Explaining Benming Year and yearly fortune changes
BaZi is the comprehensive application carrier of Heavenly Stems, Earthly Branches, Five Elements and Zodiac, and it is the most representative part of Chinese folk fate culture.
