Two herb-gatherers encounter celestial maidens by a mountain stream. One maiden carries a blue bird in her sleeve; after she departs, only an empty cicada shell remains.

Boqiu the Thousand-Year Fox
义狐报恩 · 呼名消灾
千年狐精化为人形，隐于官府为吏。主人遇难时，呼其字"伯裘"，狐即现身相救。
A thousand-year fox-spirit hides in human form as a government clerk. When his master faces mortal danger, calling the fox by its name — "Boqiu" — brings instant rescue.

The Dog Black Dragon Saves Its Master

主人醉卧荒野，大火烧来。犬以身浸水湿草，反复往返，终以命换主人之生。
A man lies drunk in a field as wildfire approaches. His dog wets itself in a stream and soaks the grass around its master, running back and forth until the fire passes — at the cost of its own life.

Zhang Gou Scolds the Thunder God
凡人抗天 · 正气凛然
农夫章苟在田中耕作，食物屡被蛇偷。他怒骂雷公不公，雷神反以霹雳诛蛇——正气胜天。
A farmer's lunch keeps getting stolen by a snake. He curses the Thunder God for allowing injustice. The Thunder God, chastised, strikes the snake dead with a bolt of lightning.

毛宝放龟
Mao Bao's Grateful Turtle
放生报恩 · 因果轮回
军人毛宝买龟放生。后兵败投江，巨龟浮来载之渡水——十年前的一念善心，换回一条命。
A soldier buys a turtle and releases it. Years later, defeated in battle and drowning in the river, a great turtle surfaces beneath him and carries him to safety.

About the Author 作者简介

陶潜，字渊明，东晋大诗人，"不为五斗米折腰"的隐逸之宗。其诗文清淡自然，志怪亦然——比干宝少一分诡异，多一分田园诗意。

Tao Qian (Tao Yuanming), the great recluse-poet of the Eastern Jin, is best known for pastoral poetry. His ghost stories carry the same quality — lighter, more lyrical than his predecessor Gan Bao, infused with a longing for the simple life beyond the world's dust.
