"Marvelous Objects" appears in Volume Ten of Youyang Zazu, recording various magical items — each a miniature story. With a naturalist's eye, Duan Chengshi assembles rare objects scattered across diverse sources, creating what might be called a Tang dynasty "encyclopedia of wonders."
This section selects four representative marvels: the mirror of past lives人镜 rén jìngA mirror that reveals one's previous incarnation. The concept implies the soul retains memories of past lives, with the mirror as the tool to awaken them. This is closely tied to Buddhist ideas of reincarnation., the dream pillow, the self-warming cup, and the memory pearl. Each object embodies one of humanity's deepest desires: glimpsing past lives, entering another's mind, warming wine without fire, and never forgetting.
Mirror of Past Lives — Among Qin-dynasty mirrors, there was one that, when gazed into, revealed one's previous incarnation. Some saw themselves as generals, some as monks, some as women. Most who looked into it covered their faces and wept.
Dream Pillow — There was a pillow that, when slept upon, allowed entry into another person's dream. To see someone, one silently recited their name, then lay down and rested one's head. Upon waking, the dream was vivid as reality, yet the other person was unaware of the visit.
Self-Warming Cup — In Qingzhou青州 Qīng zhōuOne of the Nine Provinces, in modern Weifang, Shandong. Qingzhou was known for its advanced craftsmanship in the Tang dynasty; the appearance of a marvel like the "self-warming cup" echoes the region's refined artisanal traditions. there was a cup: when wine was poured in, it warmed itself without fire. Drinking from it in winter was like swallowing spring brew. Some said the cup contained a substance that emitted heat.
Memory Pearl — There was a pearl; holding it ensured that nothing was forgotten. Placed on a desk, documents read once could never be forgotten. Released from the hand, memory returned to normal. It was lustrously white莹白 yíng báiLustrous and white. "莹" describes the translucent sheen of jade or pearls. The color description implies a semi-precious stone material, sensorially unified with the "memory-enhancing" function., the size of a sparrow's egg.
The Archetypal Significance of Marvelous Objects
The four objects in "Marvelous Objects" correspond to four of humanity's deepest desires: the mirror to "know the past," the dream pillow to "enter another's mind," the self-warming cup to "warmth and comfort," and the memory pearl to "never forget." This narrative technique of "materializing desire" is the core mode of later fantasy literature. From Harry Potter's magical objects to Marvel's Infinity Stones, all can be traced to this prototype.
Especially notable is the "mirror of past lives": those who looked "mostly covered their faces and wept." This detail is exquisitely crafted — it implies that past lives were not all beautiful, and knowing them is actually a burden. This skepticism toward "omniscience" echoes Zhuangzi's "our life is limited, but knowledge is limitless."
The Fusion of Naturalism and Supernaturalism
Duan Chengshi's method is minimalist — each object described in barely dozens of characters, without elaboration. This "naturalistic" recording style lets readers imagine the stories behind these items. Placed side by side, the four objects create a "cabinet of curiosities" effect — as if Duan were a museum curator presenting his collection.
A pillow enabling entry into others' dreams. This concept engages the ancient Chinese "dream" culture — dreams are not mere sleep hallucinations but a form of soul-travel across space. Daoism speaks of "spirit wandering"; Buddhism of the "intermediate body" — both hold that the soul can leave the body during dreams. The dream pillow materializes this belief into a controllable tool — whoever you wish to see, you can enter their dream. This predates the concept of Inception by over a thousand years.
A pearl that grants perfect memory when held. The "memory pearl" parallels modern "brain-computer interfaces" or "memory enhancers" — both attempt to transcend the physiological limits of human memory. The pearl "lustrously white as a sparrow's egg" gives it a jade-like quality. Notably, releasing it restores normal memory — suggesting the enhancement is temporary, a "plug-in" rather than permanent change. This "reversible enhancement" concept has modern neuroscientific parallels (e.g., transcranial magnetic stimulation).
