Fighting Japanese pirates in the Ming Dynasty, Qi Jiguang created the "Mandarin Duck Formation": short, stout shield bearers in front; tall soldiers with long spears clearing the way; elite troops thrusting; brave men guarding; weaker but meticulous men handling logistics; and a wise commander directing from center. Twelve men moved as one, achieving a casualty ratio of 1:100.
