Li Mu Defeats the Xiongnu: A Decade of Silence, Then Thunder

赵国名将李牧守边,面对匈奴侵扰,做出反常识决策:坚壁清野,不许出战。朝廷屡次斥责他怯战,李牧不为所动。十年间他「避」而不「战」,实则养精蓄锐、麻痹敌人。待匈奴单于大军倾巢而来,李牧突然以战车结阵困敌,骑兵两翼包抄,一战歼灭十万。权变不是随机应变,而是有备之变。

The Zhao general Li Mu guarded the frontier against Xiongnu raids, making a counterintuitive decision: fortify walls and forbid engagement. The court denounced him as cowardly, yet Li Mu remained unmoved for a decade. When the Xiongnu Chanyu led his full force, Li Mu suddenly trapped them with chariot formations while cavalry struck from both flanks, annihilating 100,000. Contingency is not random adaptation, but prepared flexibility.
