Transmission Flow

From Bamboo Slips to Modern Text
01

Original Bamboo Slips

c. 500–200 BCE

The original text composed by Sun Wu (or his school), written on bamboo slips. Multiple versions formed through Warring States period copying and revision.

02

Western Han Textual Lineages

c. 200–100 BCE

Yinqueshan slips prove multiple lineages. The Hanshu Bibliography records "82 chapters of Sun Tzu's Art of War," indicating expanded editions already existed.

03

Cao Cao's Standard Edition

c. 200 CE

Cao Cao canonized the 13-chapter format with commentary, creating the standard text for the next 1,800 years. The pivotal turning point in textual history.

04

Song Woodblocks & Military Canon

1080–1200 CE

Song-era printing enabled mass circulation. The Seven Military Classics established the official standard, running parallel to the Eleven Commentators tradition.

05
