八字入门 — Four Pillars of Destiny
Your birth moment holds a cosmic fingerprint. BaZi (八字) transforms your birth date and time into a chart that reveals your elemental nature, personality patterns, and the rhythm of fortune across your lifetime. This guide teaches you how to read your own chart from scratch.
BaZi (八字, Bā Zì — "Eight Characters") is one of the most important branches of Chinese metaphysics. Developed during the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE) and refined through the Song and Ming dynasties, it maps a person's destiny based on the exact moment of birth.
The name "Eight Characters" comes from the eight Chinese characters that make up your chart: four pairs, one for each pillar (Year, Month, Day, Hour). Each pair consists of a Heavenly Stem (天干) on top and an Earthly Branch (地支) on the bottom. Together, these eight characters encode the cosmic energy of your birth moment.
BaZi is also known as the Four Pillars of Destiny (四柱命理). The system is built on the same cosmological foundations as Feng Shui, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the I Ching — the Five Elements, Yin-Yang theory, and the sexagenary cycle.

When your Day Master is supported by its generating element, you feel resourced. When controlled by another, that element represents pressure and challenge. Learn more in the Five Elements Analyzer.
Luck Pillars (大运) are ten-year cycles that overlay new elemental energy onto your birth chart. They explain why certain decades feel smoother than others.
Derived from your Month Pillar, each Luck Pillar brings a Stem (5-year influence) and a Branch (10-year influence). When the pillar's element supports your Day Master, that decade brings opportunity. When it challenges, that decade brings tests and transformation.

❌ Treating BaZi as fixed prediction. BaZi describes tendencies, not fixed outcomes. The Chinese saying: "一命二运三风水四积德五读书" — destiny first, luck second, Feng Shui third, good deeds fourth, education fifth.
❌ Focusing only on the Day Master. A chart is a system, not a single element. Examine all eight characters and their interactions.
❌ Ignoring seasonal strength. Wood born in spring is strong; Wood born in autumn is weak. The Month Pillar determines this — don't skip it.
❌ Confusing BaZi with Western astrology. They are completely different systems. Learn BaZi on its own terms.
